Dr. Devi Shetty: Healing Hearts and Inspiring Minds

Imagine a world where a single heartbeat can make all the difference. Now, meet the cardiac maestro, Dr. Devi Shetty, the Chairman and Founder of Narayana Health, the heartbeat behind 21 medical centres in India. But his story is not just about surgeries and medical breakthroughs; it’s a saga of determination, compassion, and proving that a single person can change countless lives with the power of healing.

Early Ambitions

Dr. Shetty’s journey began with a dream sparked by the legendary Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the first surgeon to perform a heart transplant. A student at St. Aloysius School, Mangaluru, he envisioned a future where he could mend broken hearts and bring healing to those in need. Little did he know that this dream would lead to a legacy of over 100,000 heart surgeries.

Educational Odyssey

Completing his MBBS in 1979, Dr. Shetty’s quest for knowledge took him to the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons, in England. Armed with a determination to make a difference, he returned to India in 1989 and set out on a path that would redefine healthcare.

Revolutionizing Cardiac Surgery

In 1992, Dr. Shetty achieved a milestone by successfully performing the first neonatal heart surgery in India on a 21-day-old infant named Ronnie. His exceptional skills caught the attention of the world when he operated on Mother Teresa after her heart attack, later serving as her personal physician.

Founding Narayana Health

In 2001, Dr. Shetty founded Narayana Hrudayalaya, a multi-speciality hospital in Bangalore, driven by the belief that healthcare costs could be reduced significantly through economies of scale. His vision earned him the title “the Henry Ford of heart surgery” by The Wall Street Journal, emphasizing his commitment to making healthcare accessible to all.

Economies of Scale

Dr. Shetty’s innovative approach focused on reducing costs without compromising quality. His hospitals adopted measures like buying cheaper supplies and implementing cross-ventilation, cutting the price of coronary bypass surgery to a fraction of international rates. His “assembly line approach” allowed surgeons to perform 30 to 35 surgeries a day, providing quality care to a larger population.

Global Impact

Beyond India, Dr. Shetty’s impact extended globally. Collaborations with healthcare organizations like Ascension Health and initiatives like the Healthcare City in the Cayman Islands showcased his commitment to making a worldwide difference.

Yeshasvini – Healthcare for All

Dr. Shetty’s commitment to affordable healthcare is further exemplified by Yeshasvini, a low-cost health insurance scheme designed for the poor farmers of Karnataka, covering millions of lives.
